About us (KANNO / OUTOTSU)
In the middle of the 1970's the swaying students' political turmoil in
Japan forced me to make a decision concerning my studies. To find myself
and my own possibilities I decided to continue my education abroad.
In Paris I chose to study intaglio printing although i found it handle
and overwhelming, it fit my chemistry. So much so, that I've continued right
along with it.At the Atelier 17 run by S.W.Hayter I was sure I'd found
my way. The atelier attracted artists from all over the world creating
and stimulating the intense workshop. It made an enormous and lasting impact
on me.
A year after returning to Japan I opened up a workshop, the Atelier Outotsu.
The workshop is opened 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. To join there is
one simple requirement, that is motivation regardless of experience.
It is 33 years since in an apartment storage room. After many twists and
turns in this 1960's apartment complex, we now have acquired 9 separate
rooms turning them into studio. There are four large presses, plus a pleasant
space for a library and conference room. We can even use the roof of the
building. There are more than 50 individuals creating in a challenging atmosphere.
More than 35 members have the possibility of solo exhibitions. We have
to admit our success and we are still moving on to more. |
